The rising sign describes how you meet immediate experience. Its planetary ruler becomes the chart ruler, connecting the Ascendant with a specific sign, house and set of aspects.

More than a first impression

The Ascendant is the eastern horizon at birth and the beginning of the 1st house. It describes orientation, embodiment and the instinctive approach to unfamiliar situations.

Finding the chart ruler

Use the traditional ruler of the rising sign: Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius and Jupiter for Pisces, alongside their modern associations. Then locate that planet in the chart.

Following the ruler’s story

Its sign describes style, its house shows the life area carrying the chart’s direction and its aspects show support or tension. This creates a thread through the whole chart.
